Sports Ministry Kickoff Under 17 Sport Development Initiative

Rivers State Ministry of Sports kick start sport development initiative for under 17 athletes at the Alfred Diete Spif (Civic Centre) which geared towards harnessing  young talents .

The events will witness athletes from the twenty three local government area of the state that will compete for honours in various category of sporting event.

Seven sporting events have been lined out for the Under 17 sport development initiative as athletes will take to the pool and court for Swimming; Badminton; Tennis, Handball; basketball; Volleyball and Boxing

Speaking to www.kelvianomedia.blogspot.com.ng the honourable commissioner for sports Hon. Boma Iyaye gave an insight for the under 17 sport development initiative which is geared towards discovery of young talents that will make the state proud and also make name for them.

“To attain a high level, we need  to get beyond using elite athletes all the time when we sporting events and look for a way forward to harness talents from the grassroots, gets athletes (sports men and women) from the tender age and groom them to make Rivers State proud”.

“We will have mini championship, since we cannot carry all the different sports at the same time, we should have mini championship that will witness four to five different sports in a quarter and see how we can arrange competition for our youth, to engage and make them busy and also an opportunity for the sport council to harness talents for the state”. Games proper begin later today in some after the screening of athletes. However closing ceremony will be on Saturday at the end of every game.
