NWFL: Rivers Angels Wallop Heartland Queens

Rafiat Sule netted a brace while further goals by Vivian Ikechukwu and Ibinabo Georgewill gave Rivers Angels Football Club of Port Harcourt a comfortable 4-0 win over Heartland Queens of Owerri at the Sharks Football Stadium in match day 6 of the Nigeria Women Premier League.

The 'Jewel of Rivers' have experienced difficulties in front of goal in their past five matches but had nothing of such problems on Wednesday as their strikers made the most of their opportunities.

It was Ikechukwu who opened scoring after just five minutes on the clock with a brilliant volley when she followed up a loose ball from goalkeeper Ihejika Chinedu off a Juliet Sunday cross.

In the 32nd minute, Sule doubled the lead with a close range header to an Hannah Yusuf cross from the left flank before getting her brace in the 52nd minute.

Substitute Ibinabo Georgewill who came on in the 71st minute completed the rout two minutes later as her first contribution resulted in a goal; a free header onto a corner kick delivery from Ifeoma Paulinus.

Head Coach of Heartland Queens, Uche Eucharia after the game admitted that her side lost to a better opponent.

"It's game of football where anything can happen. We actually lost to a better side today despite our effort.

"My goalkeeper didn't help matters as she conceded cheap goals which killed the spirit of her teammates," summed Eucharia.

On his own part, Rivers Angels head coach, Edwin Okon expresed his delight with the victory and said the crop of new players recruited are beginning to blend with the old ones.

"It's usually not easy for new players play to the rhythm of the a team," began Okon.

"They're gradually picking up and rising to the occasion as you can see.

"With the result today, I believe they will get better as we progress," he added.

Rivers Angels next game will be against Ibom Angels in Port Harcourt.
