Rivers United and Kano Pillars share spoils
Amos Gyang scored a stunning header in the second half to hand Kano Pillars a share of the spoils against Rivers United in Wednesday’s rescheduled Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clash in Port Harcourt.
Godbless Asamoah had given United the lead in first half stoppage time with a supreme finish but the hosts were pegged back after the break as Pillars fought back to claim a deserved point.
The point means Rivers United stay in 13th place on the NPFL standings as they continue their tepid start to the season while Pillars climb two places to 11th.
Pillars’ head coach, Kadiri Ikhana addressed assembled media after the contest, pouring encomiums on United whom he described as a very good team.
He also claimed that his side enjoyed a fair slice of luck to avoid defeat in Port Harcourt.
“We played a very good team that is representing Nigeria in the Caf Champions League.
“They (Rivers United) are doing well in the Caf Champions League and are also a very crack team.
“I will say we are very lucky to have gotten a point in Port Harcourt,” he said at the post match press conference.
Technical manager of United, Stanley Eguma explained that a poor start to the second half cost his side maximum points.
“We started well but lost concentration early in the second half.
“My players relaxed in the early moments of the second half and that is why we conceded that goal.
“That goal put pressure on us and we failed to settle afterwards.
“When you take things for granted, you pay dearly for it,” a crest-fallen Eguma said.
