Akwa United Nail Rangers In NPFL Opener

Akwa United put up a scintillating performance to beat Rangers International FC of Enugu on Matchday 1 of the 2017/2018 Nigeria Professional Football league on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

A goal in each half by two new signings Kelly Kester and Denis Nya motivated the Promise Keepers to a resounding 2-0 victory and their first over Rangers in six attempts.

Akwa United went into the match seeking their first win over Rangers at the Nest of Champions and got the job done nicely with a dominant display.

Coach Abdu Maikaba’s men began the game on the front foot with great attacking play and they were rewarded with five corner kicks in the opening 20 minutes of the match.

After series of near misses, the home side took the lead in the 35th minute. A brilliant pass by Aniekeme Asuquo picked out Victor Mbaoma in the visitor’s box and the striker then set up a delightful ball for Kelly Kester to score a superb goal on his debut as the Uyo based team deservedly went into the break with a one nil lead.

The Promise Keepers restarted the second half with the same intensity they left off the first, but were denied the chance to increase their lead by some brave Rangers’ defending.

The visitors made a rare attempt in the 55th minute but their effort was fruitless as Ojo Olorunleke pulled two clever saves to protect his team’s advantage.

Defender Denis Nya announced his arrival to the fans in the 66th minute with an amazing solo effort from his own half before firing a ferocious strike beyond Seidu Mutawakilu in Rangers goal to extend his team’s advantage.

In a tactical substitution, Coach Abdu Maikaba introduced Adeshina Gata, Aminu Nuhu and Christian Pyagbara into the game in the last half hour of the match but they were unable to add to the score line as the game ended 2-0 in favour of the Aiteo Cup Champions.

Akwa United will next travel to Omoku, Rivers State to face Go Round FC on Wednesday on Matchday 2 of the Nigerian Professional Football Leauge.
