MATCH REPORT: Aweda Puts Angels To The Sword in Lokoja

A second half goal from Titilayo Aweda was all Confluence Queens needed to inflict a first defeat on Rivers Angels inside the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja on Wednesday.

In a very intense game, the Jewel of Rivers will have themselves to blame for failing to convert their chances.

It took a defensive blunder by Gladys Akpa in the 55th minute for the Yahaya Bello ladies to put the Jewel of Rivers to the sword through Aweda who sent home a brilliant volley.

Rivers Angels had an opportunity to level things at the Confluence stadium in the 85th when goalkeeper Monle Omini was on the ground but referee allowed play as Cynthia Aku delivered a cross inside the box to Ibinabo Georgewill who hesitated to take a shot in front of an empty post as the ball was hurriedly cleared by a Confluence defender for a corner.

After the game, an unhappy Angels head coach Edwin Okon blamed the loss on his side lacklustre performance.

"I am not a happy man at all," began Okon.

"This is a game we should have won but threw away our chances and the only one they got gave them the win.

"We just have to go back home and think of how we can pick up points from other matches away," Okon summed.

On his part, Coach of Confluence Queens, Sani Nayashi was pleased with the result.

"Rivers Angels have been giving us tough time on this ground for so many years now," said Nayashi.

"We all know that Rivers Angels are a very good side and that cannot be taken from them.

"I thank God for the result today because in football it is not over until is over," he added.

The Jewel of Rivers are now 4th on the log with 4 points and will now return home to prepare for their next game against Edo Queens in Port Harcourt.
