Bayelsa State Athletes Protest Over Unpaid Rewards

Bayelsa Athletes Protesting at the Treasury House

Bayelsa State Athletes who won medals at the 18th National Sports Festival in Abuja last year have once again taken to the streets of Yenagoa to protest their unpaid rewards.

The protest which started from the Samson Siasia Stadium to Bayelsa State Treasury House saw the athletes carrying placards with different inscriptions such as “For Nine Months We Have been Waiting, We Can’t Wait Anymore”, ‘Our rewards Must Be Paid Today”, “A Labourer is Worthy of His Wages,' "Pay Us" We Can’t Bear The Hunger Any longer".

Speaking on the Development an athlete who doubles as a coach in the Sports Council Blessing Onyeali and Mary Ajayi said since they returned from the National Sports festival that they have yet to receive their reward money promised them by the State Government.

A Kick boxer, Mr. Ugutu Andrew and Mary Jack said despite all the sacrifices they made, the State Government has yet to fulfill its promise to them.

Another kick boxer Bibian Michael who hails from Burkina Faso lamented the poor treatment she has received since her arrival.

In his reaction, Commissioner for Sports Development, Mr. Perekiye Buruboyefe urged the aggrieved athletes to be patient that something tangible would be done soon.

Team Bayelsa finished 5th at the National Sports Festival with a total of thirty two gold, fifty six silver and Forty Nine Bronze medal.
