Aiteo Cup: Rivers Angels Thrash Bayelsa Queens To Book Final Spot

A ruthless Rivers Angels side humbled arch rivals Bayelsa Queens 4-0 on Wednesday in Port Harcourt to qualify for the final of the 2017 Aiteo Cup.

A second half brace from Amarachi Ojinma and penalties from Gladys Akpa and Evelyn Nwabuoku all after a goalless first half gave the Jewel of Rivers a 6-2 aggregate victory and passage into their fourth Cup final appearance in five years.

After a number of missed chances in the first half, Head Coach of the defending Cup Champions, Edwin Okon made two early changes, one coming just one minute to the break when Chioma Wogu replaced Patience Kalu and the second saw Ugo Njoku coming on for Ifeoma Ikenokwalu in the two minutes after the break.

Three minutes after that change, Ojinma was brought down inside the box and Akpa stepped forward to convert it in the 53rd minute.

Angels’ lead was doubled in the 56th minute through Ojinma who headed home a cross from Ugo Njoku.
With the game poised to end 2-0, another penalty was awarded to Rivers Angels following a foul on Alice Ogebe and Nwabuoku made no mistake in converting from 12 yards.

The impressive Ojinma then got the brace her performance deserved when she brilliantly headed home an Nwabuoku cross from close range.

With Wednesday's win, Rivers Angels advanced into the 2017 Aiteo Cup final 6-2 on aggregate.

Head Coach of the team, Edwin Okon after the game said he knew Wednesday's encounter was going to be a walkover for his side having survived in Nembe last Saturday.

"I said it in my previous interview that this was going to be a walkover," said the former Super Falcons gaffer.

"Having survived in Bayelsa, I knew that playing at home wasn't going to be a problem," Okon added.

Angels will now wait for the winners of the yet-to-be-decided second semifinal clash between Ibom Angels and one of Abia Angels or Confluence Queens depending on the result of the former’s appeal.
